On April 12, 2024, a concert was held that fulfilled one of the American Azerbaijan Music Foundation’s (AAMF) key missions: to promote American classical music on the Land of Fire, in Azerbaijan. The program featured renowned works, including G. Chadwick’s “Symphonic Sketches” and A. Copland’s “Hoe-Down” from the ballet “Rodeo,” a piece that celebrates the American West and its vibrant culture. This concert marked the premiere performance of both pieces. Additionally, the program included the Second Suite from Gara Garayev’s ballet “Path of Thunder” and concluded with Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet” symphonic overture, which beautifully embodied the theme of love, symbolizing the friendship and respect between the two nations.

The concert, conducted by American maestro Farkhad Khudyev at the Baku State Philharmonic Hall, was a resounding success. This performance marked Khudyev’s debut with the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra, and it was a joy to witness the orchestra’s growth and development under his direction. Observing the rehearsals and preparation process was truly rewarding, as the connection between the conductor and the orchestra was immediate and harmonious.

Critics have described Farkhad Khudyev as a “phenomenon” (Seattle Post Alley) and a “magician on the podium” (Performing Arts Monterey Bay), praising his ability to connect with “invisible worlds and bring them alive in the music” (Monterey Herald). He is recognized as one of the most extraordinary and versatile conductors on the American stage.

The AAMF extended its gratitude to Ambassador Mark Libby for graciously welcoming Maestro Khudyev at the embassy in Baku. Mr. Ambassador’s social media post highlighted our foundation’s work, stating: “It was a pleasure to meet Conductor Farkhad Khudyev from The University of Texas at Austin Symphony Orchestra and discuss the important role of music as a bridge between Americans and Azerbaijanis. I wish him success in his upcoming performances and thank the Azerbaijan-American Music Foundation for making his visit possible.”

The attendance of Deputy Chief of Mission Hugo Guevara from the U.S. Embassy in Baku and his appreciation for the concert were also noteworthy. The AAMF was thrilled to celebrate the decades-long friendship between the USA and Azerbaijan through music and culture, achieving its mission of building bridges between the two nations.

We would like to thank Mr. Fuad Ibrahimov, the principal conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of Azerbaijan and Baku Philharmonic, for his invitation; the Azerbaijan State Diaspora Committee for supporting this performance; the U.S. Embassy in Baku; and ADA University for their significant involvement in this historic event.

As a non-profit organization, the AAMF aspires to create musical and cultural bridges. We believe that music transcends geographical boundaries and serves as a powerful tool for communication.

The event served as a celebration of the long-standing friendship between the United States and Azerbaijan, showcasing the cultural richness of both countries and fostering cultural diplomacy.
